Teacheneering!

Posted by Nelson

Searching for some papers to write notes for my testing e-learning, I found my third year engineering note, which I had used for multiple subjects. The note was filled with syllabi of 3 subjects.  At this time of learning my modules related to my profession, entirely online, I wonder how on earth, writing the syllabus on note would have helped me.

On the first day of class of each subject, in each semester, it has become a ritual in my college, for the lecturers to dictate the syllabus for the subject, and for us to pen them down sincerely, word-by-word. Even after the syllabus has been made available online, this ritual continues. Waste of time and energy – most important resources of this century.

Assignments! Till now, I couldn’t really find out the objective of writing assignments, except being used to revenge the mischievous students. The teachers give some questions and ask to write answers. One student copies them from text books and the rest of the class copies from her. I know one of classmates, who used to copy the assignments from certain girl and submit the assignment even before her. Again waste of time, energy and also paper, another critical resource.

Teachers with industry expertise and with continuous learning experience (such as taking up certification exams) are the need of the hour. I could not figure out how a staff, who has bought her graduate and post graduate project and has no knowledge of what project management is all about can handle Software Project Management. Or do you think that a teacher who is tutored by her junior on daily classes can handle the doubts of her students on queries in database?

If any of my staffs are reading this, my humble request to them is to make the students think and come out with their own solutions for problems, instead of cut-copy-paste culture. This culture when continued up to workplace brings shame to the student-turned-professional. We have enough typewriters and photocopy machines in this world. Let’s make more engineers.

It is of no use to blame the system and continue with the same procedure. We must remember it is we who created the system and even supported it sometimes just because of our convenience. It is the time to change. Yes, the students are willing and the industries need real game changers.  Here are some ideas that could really make an impact on making learning effective:

$ Don’t give assignments for the sake of giving. It is of no use to copying the text book junk. Give some lively assignments and ask students to submit their assignments online. For example, if you are teaching Object Oriented Programming, ask them to make an info-graphics of the history of OOP or ask them to make small project based on the concepts taught. If it is Operating Systems, ask them to find the open-source operating systems available and give their features.

$ Please never make an impression that assignments, surprise tests and seminars are ways of punishments. I had the blessing of having few lecturers who made all these wonderful experiences. I also had few lecturers, who manipulated their “extra-ordinary” teaching skills and made me to feel that even sitting in their classes was a waste of time.

$ Please accept if you do not know a concept and acknowledge the intelligence of the student who raised a doubt on that. Look out answers and give a prompt reply as soon as possible. One of my lecturers, who taught me Object Oriented Programming, was a perfect example of this. She never failed to find out and clarify our doubts, if she happens to be unaware of that.

$ Please do not spoon feed your students. Give them an idea, guide them to explore more. That doesn’t mean that you have to lecture only the first two units of a subject and give all three remaining as student-seminars (which, one of my lecturers did).

$ Questioning the beliefs and authorities are natural qualities of this generation. By no means, be an obstacle to that. By asking us to shut up and sit, you actually infuriate us and make us question more the belief. After all, we are engineering, born out of science, has the habit of questioning anything, before accepting it as a fact. So, encourage the students to ask questions.

$ We were also college students once. In fact, we should feel ourselves as students life-long, otherwise we won’t learn; we won’t progress. Remember how we wanted to be treated while we studying full-time. Treat our students with respect and if you don’t acknowledge you own students as engineers of the future, who else will?

Teachers hold the most critical position in any society. Others professionals discover, engineer, enhance the world around them. But teachers discover, engineer and enhance the professionals themselves. It is up to the teachers to feel their importance and enlighten the young minds or to neglect their mission.

Remember, ‘engineer’ is not only a noun, but also a verb.

Job scams: how to be cautious

Posted by Nelson

It has been soooo long since I posted last time. Yeah, I was a final-year-student then. Now, a full time professional. Well, this is one exact time requiring a post on jobs. Many of those who are about to pass this year, have got some good, some ok-ok, some excellent jobs. Others are waiting to dive to the sea of job-searching.

I think this is the right time to warn those aspirants about the sharks, killer fishes and octopuses out there. Most of you might have started getting emails from very impressive companies offering jobs with salaries that may make your jaw drop down. As well, you might be asked to pay a good sum of money as refundable or non-refundable deposit. And that is where the trap lies. Since the job season is starting anew for this year, make sure that you don't fall prey to any of the fake companies.

So how will you find that an offer is fake? How will you save yourself from being fooled? What actions can you take to solve it if you have being deceived? Here are some points to help you.

$ No organization sends mails from free service providers like Gmail, Yahoo, Rediffmail, etc. An offer or intimation mail will always have the company's name as its domain. For example, "careers@cognizant.com" is real whereas "hr-cognizant@gmail.com" is a pure fake.

$ No big IT company asks you to pay for the interview process. Atleast I'm sure about CTS, TCS, Wipro, Caterpillar, Infosys, HCL and the like. If you are asked to pay a nominal amount as processing fee for interview, it might be a consultancy.

$ There are some good 2-tier, start-up companies which ask you to pay quiet a big amount as refundable deposit, which you can get back after you serve the company for certain period of time. Still, it is advisable to check with your seniors regarding the worth of the company, before joining.

$ Your seniors are your best resources. Keep in touch with them and clarify your doubts regarding the authenticity of organizations and their offers. Don't expect them to promptly and immediately respond for your queries. Remember that they are busier than you. If you can't call them more than once for your queries, how can you expect them to call you back. But remember, they will always be happy to help you or atleast I am happy to do so.
$ If you have doubts, never hesitate to call up to the company and ask them. You can easily judge them from their tone while attempting to clear your doubts. They might be calling you numerous times after that, compelling you to join, which, well you know, never happens in case of real companies / offers.

$ If you find a fraudulent company and if you have time and energy, go ahead and make a complaint. Don't be silent.

Hope these help. All the best.

More on career choices to come...

Take up your weapons!! (Charge your grey cells too)

Posted by AAMEC Students

Ready to tour Chennai, in this cool, blissful climate? How would it be, if you get chances to meet and interact with various geeks, code masters, Robot-Cops from all over Tamil Nadu. Indeed, from all over India. And ofcourse the opposite gender too :)

Wouldn't it be cool if you could attend non-lullaby lectures and workshops? Some hacking stuff? Some rocket science? What say?
Kurukshetra, the battle of brains, one of the largest techno management events of Asia, the only such event in Tamil Nadu to be endorsed by UNESCO, is up in the air again. Kurukshetra is the brand-event that is hosted during every winter season, by the prestigious College of Engineering Guindy (CEG) , Anna University, Chennai.

Last year, with lot of fun, enthusiasm and cheer, K'10 even marked a world record in Origami. Their sponsors ranged from IBM to Infosys to Google, from DHL to NDTV Hindu.

With 37 events under various categories, 12 workshops (9 last year), 6 lectures and with prizes worth 1Million rupees, Kurukshetra is going to be a platform for thousands for students, as it attracted 15,000 students last year from around 75 countries.

This year K'11 is scheduled from Feb 2 to 5. Since, a large number of tech students are gathering in one place, it, sure is gonna be the Tech-Kumbamela. So, what are you waiting for? Go surf the k'11 website and register for the events now!

Is it just about participating in some so-called geeky stuffed events and winning them? Is it just about attending the workshops and coming back with certificates? It is about learning that you can still have fun in learning engineering. It is about meeting those minds which think so alike as we do, that we wonder where these guys (girls ;) ) were in the past. It is the rediscovery of the fun that we had in our kinder-garden and yet learned how precipitations occur, how tooth grow, etc.

So, you got boosted now? Well, the other-side facts now. Here is a To-do list for you:
Ø Registration for K'11 does not mean that you can participate in events straight away. Look for the individual and team events you are interested in and register for them each.
Ø Take care that there occurs no event-event, event-workshop or workshop-workshop clashes in your schedule. Note them all in Google calendar and you will get to know the overlaps. So, shortlist the events and workshops that you are attending, by choosing those which pull you much and leave the remaining.
Ø Register for the accommodation earlier to avoid last-minute hangovers.
Ø If you are attending a workshop, confirm your seat by paying the fees in time. By now, registrations for some workshops are closed. So, ACT NOW.
Ø K'11 has Student Ambassadors representing each college. If you college is not in the list, do apply for becoming SA for your college. If your college girl/guy is on the list, probably you might know her/him. Call her/him up and confirm your participation. If you are a newbie and don't know your SA, contact her/him through mail or get the help of your seniors.
Ø SA for AAMEC is: Nelson.X, Final Year, IT. You know him? The lean, tall guy with i-didn't-sleep-last-night look. Call him if you know or else mail him at: xnelson.btech[at]gmail.com
Ø If you get doubts, do look up at K'11 forum. Your doubt might already have been cleared there for someone. Or else post your queries in the respective thread(s). Or ask your SA. Get his number ( girls beware ;)) and disturb his day-time naps.
What else? Have I forgot anything else? If any, do write in comments. (Pardon me for ifs, elses, and also for reading this.)

Go, rock, enjoy, have fun....and do learn and win!!!!

All the best!!
